Rouen’s great events

Rouen through the year

The Armada, the Fête du Ventre and the Christmas market: when to visit Rouen

Rouen is worth visiting all year round, but a few events completely change the city’s atmosphere. Here are the ones we recommend to our guests, season by season — almost all of them take place a few steps from Place du Vieux-Marché.

Spring: the Joan of Arc festival

Every May, Rouen pays tribute to Joan of Arc, who was burned on Place du Vieux-Marché on 30 May 1431. For three days, the Médiévales take over the historic centre: medieval markets, jousting, craft demonstrations, balls and a grand parade on Saturday.

Summer: Cathédrale de Lumière

On summer evenings, as night falls, the façade of Notre-Dame Cathedral becomes the screen for a free light show. A beautiful way to end a day of sightseeing, five minutes’ walk from Place du Vieux-Marché.

June: the Armada

Every four to six years, the world’s greatest tall ships sail up the Seine to Rouen. For about ten days in June, around forty ships moor along the quays and are open to visitors free of charge. From Place du Vieux-Marché, the quays where the tall ships are moored are about a ten-minute walk away.

It is the city’s most eagerly awaited event, and accommodation in the centre books up very early: if you plan to come, don’t wait.

October: the Fête du Ventre

For one weekend in October, the Vieux-Marché quarter becomes Normandy’s great dining table. More than a hundred producers offer tastings of cheese, cider, andouille and preserves, alongside chef demonstrations, brass bands and traditional costume.

For Le Cotin Bleu, it is quite literally right outside the door.

October–November: the Foire Saint-Romain

From mid-October to mid-November, one of France’s largest funfairs sets up on the Esplanade Saint-Gervais, with more than 200 rides and stalls. A centuries-old tradition, and a favourite outing for families.

December: Rouen Givrée

From late November to late December, the Christmas market fills the cathedral forecourt with around fifty chalets of producers, artisans and designers. Concerts, a parade and children’s activities complete the programme across the city.

Our tips

  • For the Armada, the Fête du Ventre and December weekends, book your accommodation several months ahead.
  • Dates change from year to year: check them on the Rouen Tourism website before booking.
  • Outside these events, autumn and spring remain our favourite seasons to discover Rouen at a gentler pace.
